Sakura in Tokyo...

(sorry, Japanese link...)

Today, the sakura of Tokyo area started blooming. The announcement typically reported from a specific sakura tree registered by the government has more than 20% of it's sakura bloomed.

As for Nara, there are no updates, but since this weekend will be warm and sunny nationwide, forecast is expecting such announcement around the country.

I just hope some cold weather would come in the following weeks, since when there's some cold time before the cherry blossoms bloom, it will lengthen the time sakura is blooming.

Gary,

To answer your question, Japan does not celebrate Easter. Rather, we have the Spring Equinox holiday around 21 Mar (This year was the 20 Mar, the 3rd Thursday of the month).

The sakura always bloom around this time of the year. So, you can expect that the sakura starts blooming round the Easter timeframe, and eventually bloom completely around late Mar.

However, sakura in southern part of Japan (i.e. Okinawa 沖縄 or Hokkaido 北海道) blooms faster or later respectively. Thus, Japan enjoys the "sakura season" from later Feb through late May.
